Graduate Visas

The Temporary Graduate visa is available for applicants who have completed their studies in Australia and wish to stay to work, live or study in Australia temporarily. You can only hold this visa once as a primary applicant.

The visa is available under three streams:

1. Post-Vocational Education Work Stream

Formerly known as the Graduate Work stream, this stream is for international students who have completed an eligible qualification at the associate degree, diploma, or trade level closely related to their nominated occupation on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). To apply, you must:

  • Be 35 years of age or under at the time of application.
  • Obtain a positive skills assessment for your nominated occupation.

  • Achieve a minimum IELTS score of 6.5, with no component score below 6.0 (or equivalent).

This visa is granted for up to 18 months. However, Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders under 50 years of age may be eligible for a longer stay.

2. Post-Higher Education Work Stream

Formerly known as the Post-Study Work stream, this stream is for international students who have completed a Bachelor degree (including honours), Masters by coursework, Masters by research, or Doctoral degree (PhD) in Australia. To apply, you must:

  • Be 35 years of age or under at the time of application, unless you completed a Masters of research or PhD.

  • Achieve a minimum IELTS score of 6.5, with no component score below 6.0 (or equivalent).

The visa duration varies based on your qualification:

  • Bachelor degree (including honours): up to 2 years.

  • Masters by coursework: up to 2 years.

  • Masters by research and Doctoral degree (PhD): up to 3 years.

3. Second Post-Higher Education Work Stream

This stream is for international students who have previously held a Temporary Graduate visa under the Post-Higher Education Work stream and have completed a degree from an Australian institution in a designated regional area. To apply, you must:

  • Be 35 years of age or under at the time of application.

  • Currently hold a Temporary Graduate visa in the Post-Higher Education Work stream or have held one previously in the Replacement stream.

  • Possess a degree from a CRICOS-registered course at an institution in an eligible designated regional area.

  • Have lived in a designated regional area for a minimum of two years prior to applying.

Additional Eligibility Criteria

Regardless of the stream, primary applicants must also:

  1. Be physically present in Australia at the time of application.

  2. Hold an eligible visa (such as a student visa or bridging visa).

  3. Have met the Australian study requirement within the last six months.

  4. Satisfy health and character criteria.
