Parent Visa Planning Levels Reduced for 2026–27: What This May Mean for Queue Dates

May 25, 2026 by Rosie Acutt

The Australian Government has confirmed that the overall permanent Migration Program planning level will remain at 185,000 places for the 2026–27 program year.

However, within that overall program, the allocation for Parent visas has reduced from 8,500 places in 2025–26 to 7,060 places in 2026–27.

For parent visa applicants, this is an important development.

Although the total number of permanent visa places has not changed, the number of places available for Parent visas has decreased by 1,440 places. This means fewer permanent Parent visas are expected to be granted in the 2026–27 program year than in the previous year.

Understandably, many families waiting in the Parent visa queue will be concerned about what this means for processing times and queue dates.

What does the reduction mean?

A lower allocation for Parent visas will have some impact on queue movement. If fewer Parent visa places are available in the program year, fewer applications can be finalised.

However, the extent of the impact is not yet clear.

Parent visa queues do not move based only on the number of places available. They are also affected by refusals, withdrawals, applicants who are not ready to proceed when requested, and applicants who move between visa pathways.

This means a reduction in allocation does not automatically translate into a simple or predictable delay for every applicant.

Contributory and non-contributory Parent visa queues are shifting

One of the main factors making parent visa processing harder to predict at the moment is movement between contributory and non-contributory Parent visa pathways.

With ever increasing wait times, many contributory Parent visa applicants are now considering whether to move to the non-contributory pathway, particularly where the cost of the contributory pathway is no longer manageable or where family circumstances have changed.

At the same time, some long-standing non-contributory Parent visa applicants are applying to move into the contributory pathway. This is significant because applicants who move from a non-contributory Parent visa application to a contributory Parent visa application may be able to retain their original queue date. Where that original queue date is much older, the application may be processed much sooner than a new contributory Parent visa application lodged today.

This can create the appearance that the contributory queue is moving quickly, when in fact some of that movement may be due to older non-contributory applicants converting into the contributory pathway.

Queue dates may not tell the full story yet

Over the past year, there has been some movement in Parent visa queue dates that appears faster than many applicants expected.

There may be several reasons for this. It may reflect a higher number of grants than anticipated. It may also reflect a higher number of refusals, withdrawals, applicants changing visa pathways, or applications being finalised after long periods in the queue.

It is also possible that some recent movement is a timing issue. Until the full program year has passed and the Department’s data can be properly assessed, it is difficult to know whether the queue has genuinely moved faster, or whether the movement is temporary.

We have requested updated processing data

Once this information is available, we expect to have a clearer picture of how Parent visa applications are moving, how many applications remain in the queue, and what the reduced allocation may mean for future processing estimates.

Until then, any estimate should be treated with caution.

Key takeaways for parent visa applicants

The overall permanent Migration Program remains at 185,000 places, but Parent visa places have reduced from 8,500 to 7,060.

That is a reduction of 1,440 Parent visa places.

This reduction is likely to affect queue movement, but the exact impact is not yet known.

The situation is also complicated by movement between contributory and non-contributory Parent visa pathways. Some applicants are moving away from contributory visas, while some long-standing non-contributory applicants are converting to contributory applications and retaining earlier queue dates.

Because of this, the decrease in places should not be considered in isolation, and developments in queue movement will have an impact on wait times.

We will continue to monitor the position and provide updated guidance once the requested processing data becomes available over the coming weeks.
